Committee Members 2008/09

Chair and County Umpiring Secretary

Gloria Keech
I have been a long-standing member of the Bedford & District Netball League where I started as a player in 1970, experiencing 10 years of running a Club Team, and gaining my first Umpiring Award in 1978. I have served on the Bedford League Committee in a number of roles since 1989, with a period of 14 years as League Secretary. I have been Chairman of the County Committee for 10 years now and also have held the post of County Umpiring Secretary for the last two years.

I have an enthusiastic passion for netball at all levels and a drive for umpiring activities and am currently an A Award Umpire, Accredited Tester and Tutor.

Secretary

Sue Kemp
I played netball at secondary school in Hertford as we had a super PE teacher (Anne Marie Riddle – Herts County Chair) who really bought out the best in her pupils. Unfortunately once I left school I stopped and didn’t take it up again until I was in my mid 20s and have been playing regularly since then (20 years). Although I’m of no great standard I love the game. I am a C Award umpire and enjoy that too. I am the Press Officer for the Luton, Dunstable and District League and it’s a role I relish – it’s so rewarding see my articles in the local paper. I play in both Bedford and Luton – running the Luton team

I have been the Secretary at Westoning Netball Club for the past 5 years and in the process helped the Club to gain their Silver Caps Award.

I have 3 daughters all playing Netball, and a very understanding husband.

I have served on the Bedford Youth/Junior Committee for 3 years and have been on the County committee since January 2007 so I’m still at the learning stage.

Alison Brightman
I started working as a volunteer within Netball many years ago when my son, aged 9 was at junior school ( he is 28 now) One afternoon whilst watching him play football I asked the PE teacher where the girls were whilst the boys played football, the teacher replied they got a choice of doing either Recorder or Sewing !! That was the start of my volunteering within schools as a Netball coach/volunteer.

In 1999 (by now I also had another son and a 9 year old daughter) I helped with some other parents to set up a Netball Club in Cranfield (where I live). We started with a group of 9 girls and now have approx 100 members.

I was Chair Person at the club for 2 years and am now also Chair person of the Bedford Youth & Junior Netball League Committee. I became the Active Sport Netball Development Officer in 2001 and I am currently working for the newly formed County Sports Partnership as a Sports Project Officer with netball being my lead sport.

Because of the nature of my job I am proud to say that the Bedfordshire Netball Committee have always been willing and able partners. This has made my role as Netball Development officer much more effective because of our good working relationship. I sit on the Committee wearing lots of different ‘hats’ but the development of netball within Beds is my priority.

Affiliations Secretary

Madeleine Cubley
For the last 10 years I have had a number of different roles within Maulden Netball Club, I have been Chair, Vice Chair and a coach. I have 2 daughters who have played in the Bedfordshire leagues from Junior through to the Adult league.

I joined Bedfordshire County Netball Committee approximately 2 years ago to help promote and develop netball for the young teams that I am involved with, as they progressed to the senior leagues.

I am very impressed with the facilities and support that Bedfordshire County provide and since serving on the committee I now realise the amount of hard work and commitment that is put in. Well done everyone!

Publicity Officer

Hayley Mackellar
I am 23 years old and have played netball since the age of 10. I played netball at school, county, regional, superleague and am now playing netball as part of the Scottish National Squad. My club is New Cambell and they play in the Premier Division 1 league. I am very excited about the year ahead.

I love to coach when i have the time, i am a level 1-2 coach due to take my level 2 and the main club i work with is Grangers and Amazons. I think that coaching also helps me develop my own game.

I am a beginner award umpire looking to take my C award. I really want to do what i can to develop Netball in the area and promote the counties excellence as much as possible.I love spending spare time with my friends and going out.

I probably qualify as the longest serving member on the County Committee, having been involved since 1962!

I have covered many roles during that time – Vice Chairman, Chairman, Umpiring Secretary, Coaching Secretary, and Chairman of Disciplinary Committee.

On a more practical note, I was an International Umpire for 8 years and attained the Advanced Coaching Award during the l980’s.

Co-opted Member

Cathie Carter
I moved to Bedfordshire 15 years ago having played netball at County level in Hertfordshire. I joined and played for a local team, which started my involvement with Beds netball.Along with 2 other parents we formed Cranfield Netball Club which today boasts over 100 members. We have 11 teams from 9 years old and beyond and I currently coach the U18’s (Nomads), U16’s (Swallows) and U12’s (Raiders) and play for Comets one of our Premiership sides.

My two daughters have now become very involved and have played at County, Regional and now at Super League level. They are now 18 and 15 and make me extremely proud that they have carried on my interest in Netball.

I am a level 2 coach, and have previously coached U16 and U14 County sides and am currently the Head Coach of the County U14 Academy.

I am a B award umpire and have been joint Chair of the Bedford Junior & Youth League Committee. I wanted to join the County Committee to help as many players get the opportunities that I have received, and hope they too can enjoy this great game!

I have been playing netball within Bedfordshire for almost thirty years, umpiring for 25+ years and coaching youngsters for the last 6 years.

I served on the Bedford & District Netball League Committee as both Match Secretary & Umpiring Secretary during my youthful years and now my children are growing up I have joined the County Committee. This is my 2nd year as Treasurer & Affiliations Secretary and I am getting better (I think).

My main interests lie in the youth structure and how we as a committee promote youth netball within our county. This is with the aim of producing the ‘Mavericks’ stars of the future. I shall be very excited when our first girl is selected for the Mavericks Senior Squad.
