Wyvern Grangers

News/Match reports

Weekend of 26 & 27 February 2011:

Wyvern Grangers travelled to Surrey to play top of the table “Downs” in their latest National Premier Division 2 fixture at the weekend. Optimism was high following their heroics against second place Thoroughbred the week before, and despite still missing a number of key squad players. However, Wyvern were ready to step up again and take on Downs who are already safe as divisional champions for 2010-11. The Surrey outfit would have been expecting a tough contest against fourth place Wyvern and the travelling contingent gave their all to finish worthy 33-34 winners. Wyvern’s second half performance reflects only one defeat in their last nine matches. With one remaining game away against Sussex to finish the campaign, a top four place is assured. In fact, they have just an outside chance of reaching the Division 1 play-offs if other results go their way.

Wyvern Grangers 2

News/Match reports

Weekend of 12 & 13 March 2011

Wyvern Grangers II were in action at the Bunyan Centre on Sunday taking on Leighton Buzzard Vipers in a local derby. Both teams knew that their position in the league could ultimately depend on the result of this fixture with Wyvern especially needing a win. It was Wyvern who looked the more determined team from the outset fighting for every loose ball and turnover which saw them take the first quarter by a narrow 10 goals to 8. Coach Southam made no changes for quarter two and they didn't let her down by consolidating the lead with another 10 - 8 quarter success. A change in the Wyvern attacking circle saw them come out with all guns blazing in quarter three with Danielle Stigwood GS and Hannah Southam GA putting the Vipers defence on the back foot with their continued rotation and movement. Wyvern opened up a 9 goal lead after 7 minutes, but Vipers were not going down without a fight and to their credit fought back to reduce the deficit to 7 goals by the quarter end. Coach Southam asked her young team for one final last quarter effort and she must have been pleased with the response as they upped their game to finally clinch a well deserved victory by 45 - 33. Wyvern will now look to build on this result and go into next weeks game against Christchurch with renewed confidence. Danielle Stigwood was named player of the game for Wyvern. Wyvern Grangers U16s

News/Match reports

Weekend of 8th & 9th January 2011:

Wyvern Grangers U16s played host to Comberton in the season's first East of England Regional U16 league game. Wyvern started off a little hesitant, but once their first goal went in they quickly settled down and dominated throughout the match. Taking the first quarter 16-4. Comberton came out strong in the second quarter and took advantage of Wyvern's single offers in attack, and looser defending, to only loose the second quarter 12-10. With the Wyvern girls refocusing during the half time interval they tightened up their marking and quality of movement taking the third quarter 20-3. Wyvern continued to dominate in the last quarter finishing the game 62 - 25. Charlotte Sullivan and Clare Drakeford took 19 interceptions between them. The consistent shooting of Emily Fensome and Phoebe Reid was excellent. Emily Fensome, 80% shooting stats, was voted player of the match, a well deserved award. Well done to Comberton who worked hard right to the last whistle
