Six years of rebuilding, and National Premier League returns

Six years after slipping out of the league when some senior players moved onto greater things, Wyvern-Grangers built on their recent East-of-England Regional netball league success with a tremendous effort at the weekend.

As the East Region’s runners-up, Wyvern had prepared very well for the National Netball Premier League play-offs at Loughborough over the weekend. Twenty-one strong squads from across the UK converged to contest three places in Premier Division 2, and ten new places in the new Premier Division 3. Not even the stifling indoor heat, which left players gasping for breath, or the warmest day so far this year, could detract from the fierce competition.

Having been relegated, Wyvern knew what was needed and their new combination of youth and experience, plus absolute determination, had left them in good shape to secure a national league position at some level. However, what followed over the two days was far better than some had expected. They dominated all that was placed in front of them as they took six wins from six games. A return that ensured they grabbed one of the three Division 2 places as group winners. A feat equalled by the East’s other play-off contenders, Turnford. These two results show once again just how strong our local netball is.

Bedford’s new era of netball enthusiasts can look forward to seeing some of the best netball in England if they come to the Bunyan Centre from October 2010. Wyvern, by then, will have got themselves ready for the increased challenge ahead, but for now they are just finishing their celebrations.

Not to be outdone, Wyvern’s U14 squad entered and won the inaugural Northampton open tournament at the weekend. Although the final was a close affair, Bedford’s young athletes held up well in the hot sun to win every game.
