Cranfield Swallows v Norfolk United

Magnificent Seven!

Cranfield Swallows travelled to Norwich to play Norfolk champions in the East-of-England U16 Regional League at the weekend with a minimum squad of 7, depleted by injuries and unavailability.

Despite the long journey, they got off to a steady start, but fell behind in the first quarter 13-12. Some re-adjustment and determination saw a significant second quarter turnaround and Swallows shooting was almost perfect as they reversed the score by half-time to be 26-18 ahead.

At half time, Norfolk brought on fresh and experienced players, but they could not stamp their authority on a game slipping away. The Cranfield defence marked tightly, the centre court were fluid and the shooters finished off with some style. In addition, fitness proved key in the final quarter as our local girls finished worthy 48-38 winners to make it three wins from five games played.

The team for this match was:- Melissa Bygraves (GS), Jenna Miller (GA), Dani Johnson (C), Natalie Foster (GD), Hannah Carter (GK), Emily Wade (WD) and Hayley Warren (WA).

Player of the match chosen by the opposition was Jenna Miller.

Swallows now look forward to their last match at home on Sunday 15th March against Star NC.

Ipswich V Cranfield Swallows

"The East wind duth blow"

Cranfield Swallows braved the blizzards on Sunday and travelled to Ipswich for their 3rd match in the East-of-England U16 Regional league. The day could have started better when 3 Swallows' players got lost in Ipswich and they arrived late for the start. However, Swallows took the field with the remaining 7, albeit many were playing in unusual positions. As is often the case, this unexpected challenge galvernised the squad and they swooped into a first quarter 13-9 lead. The missing players arrived for the second quarter and the momentum was maintained as Swallows took that quarter 11-5. With a strong half time lead, Swallows were in no mood to let it slip and despite a further deteriation in the weather, they ran out winners in the final two quarters 12-5 and 13-10. The final result of Ipswich 20 Cranfield Swallows 49 provided some inner warmth on the long journey home. This win moves Swallows to second place with three played. Melissa Bygraves shooting was consistent throughout and she was named Swallows' player of the match. They meet Chelmsford at Cranfield on Sunday 1st March for their next match.

Cranfield v Tunrford

Cranfield Swallows continued their East-of-England U16 Regional league campaign with a home game against Turnford of Hertfordshire. Despite a competitive display, and a fourth quarter success, the experienced Turnford squad ran out 52-33 winners on the day. Swallows travel to Ipswich for their next fixture.

Cranfield Swallows v Rookies

Cranfield Swallows played their first match away to Rookies (who were representing Cambridgeshire) on Saturday.10th January.

Swallows got off to a steady start winning the first quarter 11-6. Following a quick team talk at quarter time suggesting a few tactical defending skills, Swallows managed to disrupt Rookies game plan and took the next quarter 17-3.

At half time Swallows were able to make some substitutions and still maintain their game plan and took the third quarter 15-6. One more change in the 4th quarter saw Swallows sweep to a 49-25 win.

Swallows speed and agility in the centre court along with some accurate shooting and strong circle defending, proved to be the recipe for success.

The squad for this match was:- Melissa Bygraves, Jenna Miller, Dani Johnson, Beth Noble, Lucia Smith, Natalie Foster, Hannah Carter, Emily Wade, Amy Mirwald and Hayley Warren.

Player of the match chosen by the opposition was Dani Johnson who played WA and Centre.

Swallows now look forward to meeting Turnford at home on Sunday 25th January.
